Dagger Directive on Steam Deck and Controller
1.0 advertised handheld support. Your unit still has to prove it.
Version 1.0 lists controller support and Steam Deck compatibility next to the finished campaign. Patch 0.9.0 is when pads and handheld language first shipped in Early Access. Hotfix 0.9.01 existed because that first week broke mappings and made people angry. If your Deck build feels cursed, you are not the first operator to hear “reset to default.”
This page is the handheld and pad brief. The long bind list still lives on Controls. Read both if a greyed-out lock is eating a face button.
What official notes actually promised
0.9 thanked players who could finally join with controllers or mobile Steam devices (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam Deck, ROG Ally). It also added a UI Menu Scaling slider under General for handheld fonts. 1.0 repeated controller support and Deck compatibility as launch pillars. That is a compatibility claim, not a 60 fps promise on every Shadow Strike villa. System requirements is still a Windows-minimum card. Test your unit on a small original-theater op before you schedule a four-player night on the Gulf island.
First-hour Deck checklist
- Install the 1.0 build. Proton or native — use whatever Steam’s Deck verification currently marks. If a community note says a specific Proton version, try it once; do not stack five overlays.
- Open the in-game controls screen and reset to default once. EA patches taught this wiki that leftover PC binds plus a pad is how menus die.
- Confirm walk. Keyboard default is a sprint. On a stick, slow tilt is the walk. If the stick’s deadzone makes “slow” into “jog,” you will be heard. Stealth does not care that you are handheld.
- Confirm pouches. Number-row chords on PC became face-button or radial problems on pads. If a pouch is a lock (grey text), that is a 1.0 limitation, not a broken Deck.
- Confirm plus/minus zeroing or the pad equivalent. Ballistics is useless if you cannot change the zero without a keyboard.
- Save on the ramp with the pad. If the save chord is awkward, rebind it before a real patrol.
What still fights a handheld
Scopes. Dagger Directive’s glass is a Delta Force homage: offset, zoom on the wheel. A trackpad can zoom. A right stick cannot scroll the way a wheel can unless you bound it. Practice on the ship range, not on a Bering kilometre.
Pouches plus drones. Recon altitude and detonation want precise chords. Drones on a Deck is doable; it is not the same as a mouse. Fly lower. Detonate later.
Airstrikes. Airstrikes are a radial or a pouch you must not fat-finger. An Apache hover started because your thumb slipped is a two-minute confession.
Text. Briefing cards and Workshop descriptions are desktop-sized. Read the objective list twice before you pocket the Deck.
Controller on a desktop
Same reset. Same walk test. Disconnecting a pad in the menu crashed screens in EA; 0.9.01 targeted mapping, not every edge case. If you hot-plug a pad mid-mission, expect to pause and re-open controls. Do not hot-plug in co-op and then blame desync for a bind you just invented.
Grey locks exist so you stop fighting the engine. If a function cannot be remapped, the lock is the answer. Pick another button for the things that can move.
Performance honesty
1.0 spent months on performance language in the launch post. Handhelds still lose frames in particle-heavy courtyards and when an Apache is working. Drop shadows, cap the frame rate, and play day-silent on the first Deck op. Night NVG plus a Workshop valley is a stress test, not a first date.
If the unit thermal-throttles, shrink the plan: one door, no M32, no airstrike. The mission planner still applies. The map does not care that you are on a train.
Co-op from the couch
Host on the stronger box if you can. A Deck host plus three PC clients is a networking experiment. Run the shared-corpse test from Co-op on a short original map before Shadow Strike. If only the Deck sees a standing body, restart before you add explosives.
What this page will not claim
We will not stamp a Steam Deck Verified badge the store did not print in the materials we used. We will not invent a community layout file. We will not say every 1.0 cosmetic and every Workshop gun is comfortable on a seven-inch screen. When a numbered patch retunes deadzones, Patch history gets the line.
If the pad feels good on the ship and terrible on ice, the theater is the problem, not the Deck. Change the door. Then change the bind.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does Dagger Directive 1.0 support Steam Deck?
Official 1.0 notes list handheld compatibility. Test your unit on a short original-theater op; it is not a 60 fps promise.
When did controller support arrive?
Patch 0.9.0 added pads and handheld language. Hotfix 0.9.01 fixed mapping issues from that week.
Why should I reset binds on Deck?
Leftover keyboard chords plus a pad was a recurring EA failure. Default once, then rebind walk, pouches, and save.
Can I host co-op from a Steam Deck?
You can try. Prefer a stronger host, and run a desync test before Shadow Strike or airstrikes.
