Every bullet in Dagger Directive has mass, velocity, and a trajectory the game simulates in real time. Shrapnel from grenades does too. That is why a hip spray at 200 metres is a weather report, not a tactic. This page is the marksmanship brief that Getting Started defers to and that Weapon ranks assume you already respect.

You do not need a mil-sim degree. You need a rangefinder bind, plus and minus for zero, and the humility to wait one second before the shot that alerts a valley.

Zeroing like the old Delta Force games

Scopes pop a window and leave the rest of the screen free — the classic look. Zero with plus and minus after you know the distance. Guessing “this feels like 200” is how you dust snow in front of a sentry and teach him your ridge.

Binoculars and the laser rangefinder exist so you stop guessing. Default LRF is often middle mouse under sight activation; confirm it on Controls after any reset. Lase the chest you want, let the optic droop, then fire. If the target is moving, lead with the same honesty you would use in any ballistics game. The bullet is late on purpose.

What the simulation actually punishes

  • Drop. Long shots without a fresh zero miss low. Night plus adrenaline makes people forget to re-lase after they crawl twenty metres closer.
  • Lead. Patrols walk. A stationary zero on a walking man is a miss behind him.
  • Ricochet and materials. Concrete and earth talk. The sound design is one of the reasons reviews call the gunfights tense. It also means a miss can still announce you.
  • Fragmentation. Grenades are not cartoon spheres. Stay out of your own pattern. The Grenadier build is a discipline kit, not a fireworks kit.

1.0 did not remove these rules. It added weapons that make them louder: the scoped M32 and the OICW-style airburst toys want the same LRF habit as a bolt gun.

OICW grenade mode without the forum thread

Players asked why the grenade scope “offset” moved and the LRF stuck at a huge number. The useful answer from the community, which matches the bind screen, is:

  1. Middle mouse (or your sight-activation bind) fires the LRF.
  2. The optic droops for that range.
  3. The fuze is set to burst a few metres above the aim point if the ground matches the lase.
  4. Offset nudges that burst earlier or later — elevation, a wider spread, or a small aim correction.

If you skip the lase, you are lobbing a guess. If you lase a ridge and aim at a courtyard below it, the fuze is lying to you. Re-lase the thing you want dead. Drones can mark the courtyard first so you are not ranging the wrong roof.

Attachments that change the math

Suppressors, longer barrels, and different optics do not delete drop. They change how you see it. A high-magnification scope without a rangefinder is a pretty miss. An underbarrel shotgun does not care about 300-metre zero — it cares that you remembered to switch modes before the door. Put the mode swap on a bind you will hit while scared.

Read Role builds for which kits even bother with long glass. A Pacific hut-clearer can live on iron sights and smokes. A Bering ridge cannot.

Practice without wasting a campaign save

Use the ship ranges. Then use a short official mission or a Workshop map as a live range: pick one compound, lase three distances, and leave. Free Play was on the post-EA roadmap for spawning targets; if your build has it, that is the cleanest classroom. If not, the ranges plus one quiet save-scum on a ridge will do.

When the first shot is clean, Stealth tells you to move. A perfect zero does not help a player who stays in the same bush for the search party. When you want to pack the right optic before the brief, the loadout planner and mission planner exist so you do not bring a 4x into a night alley or irons onto a snow kilometre.
