How to Stay Unseen in Dagger Directive
Quiet feet, broken lamps, and a plan for the scout who heard the first shot.
Stealth in Dagger Directive is not a meter and a cooldown. Enemies have a cone of vision and a pair of ears. If you stand in the cone, you are seen. If you sprint outside the cone, you are still heard. Alerted AI then hunts, and a hunt sees farther than a bored sentry.
This is the page people need after the first “I was in a bush” death. Pair it with Controls so walk actually exists on your keyboard, and with Getting Started if you have not yet finished a quiet extract.
How you get detected
Vision. Cones are real. A sentry facing your ridge will pick you off the snow. A sentry facing the road will not, until you stand up. Night lowers vision. Flashlights, lamps, and your own muzzle undo that gift. 1.0 also tightened how AI reacts to suppressed fire and bullet impacts, so “I have a can, I am invisible” is a 2025 habit you should retire.
Sound. Default keyboard movement is loud. Walk, crouch, prone, or aim-walk. Those four are the stealth kit. Controllers can sneak by feathering the stick — do not pin it to the rim. Reloads, unsuppressed shots, and explosive drones are broadcasts.
Alert. Once someone is spooked, they scout. They can see you from farther away. They send friends. They fire into the last place they heard a shot. The Steam stealth guide that veterans still share says the quiet fix is to displace after a shot under a few hundred metres, especially if the victim had a scope.
Grass, lamps, and the environment
The store pitch is accurate: large maps, multiple doors, foliage, verticality. Use them.
- Prone in grass is close to invisible. A little grass still helps.
- Shoot lamps when the dark is yours. Do not shoot the one lamp that silhouettes you against a white wall.
- Shadows and ridgelines beat roads. Helicopters already announced you; do not announce yourself again on the dirt track.
- Smoke is a door. Toss it, walk through, melee. It is also how the AI hides from you — they will throw smoke and go prone.
Night is a stealth modifier, not a stealth win. Pack NVGs from Gear. If you forgot them, restart the brief and pick day. Pride is not a pouch.
Weapons that keep the cone empty
A suppressor is a volume knob, not a cloak. Melee is quieter than a canned SMG. A sniper shot at 300 metres can still draw a search if someone had glass on your hillside. The Role builds ghost kit exists for this: short suppressed primary, pistol, recon drone, claymores on the route you already cleared.
If you must shoot, shoot once, move, and watch the search party. Kill the runner they send or that runner will find you ten minutes later with friends. Ballistics keeps the first shot honest so you are not taking a second, louder one.
Drones and stealth
A recon drone is the quietest scout in the game if you stay under the 200-metre ceiling and do not hover in a sentry’s face. AI vision on drones was reduced in a mid-EA patch, then improved again toward 1.0. Assume they can still swat a lazy hover. Explosive drones are the opposite of stealth — use them to break a hunt, not to start one, unless the brief is already loud. Drones has the ranges and the marker/laser binds.
When the hunt starts
You have three honest options:
- Break line and freeze. Prone in grass, walk, wait. Alerted cones are wide; patience still works.
- Displace and re-zero. Especially after a mid-range shot. The mission planner should have given you a second ridge.
- Go loud on purpose. Swap to the assault pouch, smoke the lane, and finish the objective. Half-stealth after a siren is how people die in doorways.
Save before you test any of those. Save-anywhere is the stealth safety net. In Co-op, one player can mark while another crawls — that is the mode’s best stealth argument.
Theater notes
- Bering Sea: snow silhouettes. Crawl the folds. Night plus NVGs is the intended ghost route.
- South Pacific: grass is a gift. Roads are a curse. Generators are noise cover, not invisibility.
- Eastern Europe: windows. Assume a balcony. Kill lamps on your street only.
- Global Ops: new 1.0 geometry. Recon first. Do not improvise a ghost route you have never walked.
The Walkthrough expands those briefs. This page only cares that you leave fewer footprints than the last reset.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does a suppressor make me invisible?
No. It lowers gunshot noise. Vision cones, sprint, and alerted scouts still find you.
Why did an enemy shoot the hillside I already left?
Alerted AI searches the last shot. Displace after a close or mid-range kill, especially if they had optics.
Is prone in grass actually hidden?
Yes, enough that veterans call it the real cloak. Combine it with walk or crawl, not a sprint into the weeds.
Should I play stealth at night?
Yes if you packed NVGs and a quiet kit. Night lowers AI vision; flashlights and lamps still ruin it.
