How to Use Drones in Dagger Directive
Scout first, detonate second, and stay inside the radio bubble.
Drones are the modern tool in a deliberately old-looking shooter. They are also easy to waste. A recon bird that hovers over a sentry is a clay pigeon. An explosive bird detonated on the wrong roof is a self-spot. This page is the field manual Getting Started promised and that Gear ranks against mines and smokes.
Two birds, two jobs
Recon. Search, mark, and (after a mid-EA update) toggle a laser. Use it to count a compound before you spend a human life on the first window. In Co-op, one player can live in the drone while another crawls. That split is the best argument for bringing friends.
Explosive. Fly, press the detonate bind, then swap back. The official blogs showed the loop as recon → explosive → recon again to admire the hole. Do that when the brief is already loud, or when a hunt has you pinned and you need a door. Do not open a stealth insert with a boom unless you enjoy the Stealth hunt chapter.
You will not carry infinite airframes. Pouch space is the real ammo count. The meme “Demolition Drone” loadout exists in community threads for a reason — it is a challenge, not a default.
Range, ceiling, and why you lose the picture
Official notes put range at 500 metres and altitude at 200 metres. Those are game limits, not suggestions. If the picture dies, you flew out of the bubble or into a hill. Turn around before you “debug” the bind.
AI can see drones. A patch reduced that vision; later AI work made enemies more willing to shoot what they see. Assume a hover over a courtyard is a request to be grounded. Fly behind ridgelines, pop up, mark, drop back. The marker exists so you can leave.
Binds and the drone menu
Read the on-screen drone instructions once. Confirm on Controls:
- Swap to the controller
- Place a recon marker
- Toggle the recon laser
- Detonate the explosive frame
- Swap back to your rifle without holstering your dignity
Saving and loading with drones out was a real multiplayer bug. 1.0 is the build you should test, but if a dead drone ghosts a joining client, restart the session before you blame the map. Co-op lists that check.
When a drone is the wrong tool
- Tight interiors. A bird in a stairwell is a loud toy. Take the shotgun.
- Windless stealth on snow. A dark hover against white sky is a silhouette. Use binoculars and a crawl.
- You have no pouches left for NVGs. Night plus drone plus no goggles means you land blind after the battery dies.
Use the loadout planner if you cannot decide between a third grenade and a recon frame. Overwatch and ghost kits almost always want the recon. Grenadier kits can skip it if the M32 is doing the scouting with explosions.
Theater habits
Bering compounds sit in open white. Recon from a fold, not from the helicopter’s shadow. Pacific camps hide in trees — fly low or the canopy eats your laser. European blocks need vertical peeks; a 200-metre ceiling is plenty if you are not trying to film a documentary. Global Ops is new geometry: spend the first minute of a 1.0 mission on recon even if you think you are good.
Workshop maps may ignore your habits. A custom rooftop can be a drone playground or a radio dead zone. Workshop is where you learn the board; this page is where you learn not to donate free airframes to a sentry with a shotgun.
When the mark is down, put the controller away and become a person again. Drones do not extract. You do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How far can drones fly in Dagger Directive?
About 500 metres out and 200 metres up. Leave those bubbles and the picture dies.
Can enemies shoot down my drone?
Yes. Vision on drones was tuned more than once. Hovering in a courtyard is how you lose the frame.
What is the difference between recon and explosive drones?
Recon marks and can laser. Explosive detonates on a bind. Scout first unless the brief is already loud.
Do drones work in co-op?
Yes. Let one player scout. Watch for old bugs with dead drones and joins; restart if clients disagree.
